January 12, 2012

As we come to the beginning of a new year, it is time to reflect on the progress made in the evolution of the International Association of Chinese Allergists and Immunologists. The year 2011 was a year of changes. I have moved from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States and have continued to carry on the task of trying to develop the organization into a global professional society with participation from all continents. It gives me great pleasure to see that while our official numbers have not grown quite as fast as I would have liked, we do have representation from countries in Asia, the Americas and Europe, including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United States, England and New Zealand. In addition, we have several prospective members who will soon be added to that list. As our membership reaches a critical mass, we will begin implementing several initiatives towards fulfilling the visions and mission of the organization.

Our administrative team led by Frank Wong in Hong Kong and Laura Flores-Chang in the United States has been busy developing our website. We have brought on Dr. Irene Fung as a member of our Website editorial board, and she has begun the task of developing the website that will include content for allergists, immunologists, fellows in training from various parts of the world, the public and other interest groups. Do not be surprised if she calls on some of you to help with ideas and content!

During the past year, I have traveled to various countries in Asia, and have met with immunologists and allergists. Everyone has been very excited about the creation of our new organization. I hope 2012 will be a banner year for the IACAI. We are planning our first annual meeting to coincide with the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) in Orlando in early March. All allergists, immunologists and allied health individuals are invited to attend. An announcement will be made as we approach the meeting date. With all of our busy schedules, we anticipate the need of many professionals and other individuals who will generously volunteer their time to develop our association.
